Aurizon Rockhampton Roundhouse Heritage Book.
We’re not ones to run out of steam
The story of Aurizon’s Rockhampton Roundhouse has it all, architecture, moving personal tales and a historical icon. So when they asked us to create a commemorative book in its honour, we jumped at the chance. Who hasn’t had a dream to get their work published?
What needed to be done
How do you go about marking the retirement of a building which has given over 90 years of hard work servicing trains? Aurizon wanted to create something unique that celebrated the architectural brilliance, atmosphere and memories of the Rockhampton Roundhouse. It was a bittersweet moment as the old Roundhouse’s retirement meant a lot of workers would have to say goodbye as well. But rather than it being a sad experience, Aurizon wanted to celebrate its amazing history and to show the people who had worked there that they had truly been a part of something great.
What we did
We created a beautiful, hard cover commemorative book. But not just any commemorative book, one that celebrates not only the Roundhouse itself but every employee who has ever been a part of it. From the details of its construction and effects on the rail industry to stories from the people who worked there over the years, the book was about celebrating the history of the Roundhouse and making those who were a part of it feel special. Featuring the original blueprints, nostalgic imagery and personal stories, we were able to design a book both for those with a personal history and those interested in Queensland’s rail history. And even if you don’t have an interest in rail history per se, you’d have to admit our design skills are on the right side of the tracks.
Need-to-know best bit
The Rockhampton Roundhouse Heritage Book became more than just a commemorative book for staff members, several copies now have a permanent home at both the Queensland Museum Library and the State Library of Queensland. It may be niche reading, but it’s pretty amazing that a book we designed and produced is on the shelves for everyone to see. Maybe we should go down and sign a copy.
